May 29, 1957 - April 21, 2009
GERARD JOSEPH MOORMAN (Age 51) Gerard (Gerry) Joseph Moorman died peacefully on April 21, 2009 at his home in Fairfax Station, Virginia, after a battle with cancer.  Gerry was born on May 29, 1957 in Dayton, Ohio.  He was the fourth of six children born to Earl and Eileen Moorman.  He was the loving husband of Jodi Moorman and devoted father of Kristin, Barbara, Nancy, Gerard Jr. (Buzz), Robert, and Sally.  He was the loving brother of Kathleen Moriarty (John), Christine Tanner, Peggy Hoenigman, Tom Moorman (Sharon), Mary Beth Ashcraft (Carl), and a wonderful uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Gerry graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1979.  He subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston.  In 1979, he married Jodi Lynne Gage of Akron, Ohio.  Gerry and Jodi moved to Houston, Texas in 1979 where Gerry was employed by Lockheed Martin at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) working on the Space Shuttle and Space Station programs.  He designed and implemented real-time, pilot in the loop simulations at JSC's Shuttle Engineering Simulator that were used by NASA for mission procedures development and astronaut training dating back to the very first Space Shuttle Mission, STS-1.  He also led the design of a state-of-the-art simulator at JSC that was instrumental in the success of numerous Space Shuttle missions as well as the initial construction of the International Space Station.

Gerry's leadership and technical prowess earned him several management promotions over the years leading up to Manager over all Space Shuttle and Space Station flight hardware design and development for Lockheed Martin at JSC.  One of the major pieces of hardware developed under Gerry's leadership was the Crew and Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) cart currently flying on-board the International Space Station and used by astronauts to perform various Extra Vehicular Activity space walks.  In 2003, Gerry transferred to Virginia as Vice President over a contract on the U.S. Coast Guard's Deepwater Program.  Gerry was highly regarded throughout NASA and Lockheed Martin.

Although he was an extremely dedicated and successful professional, Gerry was a very devoted husband and father.  It was always "Family First" in his mind.  He loved traveling with his wife.  He also loved anything to do with the outdoors.  He loved attending all the recitals, concerts, campouts, sporting events, and award ceremonies involving his children.  While in Houston, Gerry and Jodi hosted an annual children's Christmas party at their home with many friends that brought joy to dozens of wide-eyed children.  Following a visit by Santa Claus, Gerry personally entertained the large crowds by playing guitar and leading everyone in singing Christmas Carols.

When he was able to find time for personal recreation, Gerry loved to play golf and he was good at it.  He was a member of the JSC golf league and played in numerous tournaments around the Houston area.  He also played softball for many years at the JSC recreational facility.  Gerry was a devout Catholic and acting lector at St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church in Fairfax.  He is preceded in death by his infant daughter April Marie and father Earl Joseph Moorman.

Robert Anthony Huesman
September 27, 1957 - August 9, 2009
HUESMAN, Robert A. "Tony" 51, of Washington Township, passed away August 9, 2009.  Preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Roman and Mary Schwieterman, paternal grandparents R.J. and Gladys Huesman, mother Carol L. and sister Linda Huesman Lamb.  He is survived by his wife Carol, father Rob, nieces Ashley and Stacia Lamb and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He graduated from Alter High School in 1975, attended Miami University and worked at Tuffy Brooks Sporting Goods for 32 years.  He was president and founder of the Huesman Heart Foundation which is committed to the prevention of heart disease through the education of children.  To that end Tony authored three children's books: Heart Smart, There are Some Things More Important than Baseball and His Only Hope.  His foundation has provided free educational programs and books to many elementary school children throughout the Miami Valley and Tony is affectionately known as "the heart guy" by thousands of children in the Dayton area.

Some of Tony's honors include: American Heart Association Heart of Dayton and Service to Heart Awards, the Miami University Presidents Medal Award, the Kettering Holiday at Home Grand Marshall, Alter High School Hall Fame Distinguished Alumni, Presidential Daily Points of Light Award, Dayton Area Heart Association Affair of the Heart Award Winner, Life Connections Humanitarian Award, Kettering Kiwanis Citizen of the Year, USSA Softball Legend Award.  Additionally, Tony's contributions to his community have been recognized by three United States Presidents.

As the longest living, single donor heart transplant recipient, Tony lived every day with one purpose: "It doesn't really matter when we die, how we die or why we die.  What really matters though is how we live... and the hearts and souls of those we touch along the way."  Visitation will be held, Wednesday, August 12th from 4:00 8:00 p.m. at Westbrock Funeral Home, 5980 Bigger Road, Kettering 45440.  Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 13th at Davids Cemetery, Kettering, OH with services at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.  In lieu of flowers, the family please asks that memorial contributions be made to The Huesman Heart Foundation.

Article in the National Press:
A heart transplant recipient who lived a record 31 years with a single donated organ has died at age 51 of cancer, his heart still going strong, his widow said.  Tony Huesman died Sunday night.  "He had diabetes and cancer," Carol Huesman said Monday.  "His heart-believe it or not -held out.  His heart never gave up until the end, when it had to give up." Huesman got a heart transplant in 1978 at Stanford University.  That was just 11 years after the world's first heart transplant was performed in South Africa.  He became the longest-living American recipient of a single transplanted heart in 2000, when a patient who had received a transplant a year before him had to undergo a second transplant.  At his death, Huesman was listed as the world's longest survivor of a single transplanted heart both by Stanford and the Richmond, Va.-based United Network for Organ Sharing.  "I'm living proof a person can go through a life-threatening illness, have the operation and return to a productive life," Huesman told the Dayton Daily News in 2006.

He worked as marketing director at a sporting-goods store.

Huesman was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy while in high school.  His heart, attacked by a pneumonia virus, was almost four times its normal size from trying to pump blood with weakened muscles.  Huesman's sister, Linda Huesman Lamb, also was stricken with cardiomyopathy and received a heart transplant in 1983.  The two were the nation's first brother and sister heart transplant recipients.  She died in 1991 at age 29. Huesman founded the Huesman Heart Foundation in Dayton, which seeks to reduce heart disease by educating children and offers a nursing scholarship in honor of his sister.  "He touched a lot of lives," Carol Huesman said.

This article was in the Dayton Daily News and talked a lot more about Tony:
In the end, it was not his heart that got him.  When I heard that Tony Huesman died from melanoma, it struck me as horribly unfair, after how hard he had fought, from a very young man, to fight heart disease.  After all he had already lost to the disease - his beloved mother, Carol Lee Huesman, in 2003, and his sister, Linda Lamb, in 1991 at the age of 29.  When she received her heart transplant in 1983, they became the first brother-sister transplant recipients in the nation. How could someone like that be stricken with cancer?  Hadn't he borne enough burdens? I still feel that way.  Like our whole community, I am mourning the loss of a lovable guy who gave back far more than he was ever given.  Yet there's a certain poetic justice in the fact that Tony Huesman's heart never gave out.  It would be hard to imagine a man with a bigger heart, a more oversized zest for life.

He received his heart transplant in 1978 at the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, Calif., the first hospital in the nation to perform the procedure.  At age 20, he became the hospital's 153rd transplant patient.  When I first met Huesman in 2003, he was the second-longest surviving heart transplant patient in the United States and, most likely, the world.  At the time of his death Sunday, at 51, Huesman had moved to the top of the list.

It was the stuff of Guinness, yet I was struck by what a regular guy he was.  He loved the Reds and the Bengals, and fulfilled his promise as a sports-crazed youth with his long career at Tuffy Brooks Sporting Goods.  He stayed close to a core group of buddies from Alter High School.  He doted on his wife Carol, an intervention specialist at J.E. Prass Elementary School in Kettering, whom he married Aug. 2, 1997.  "I love him," she explained, "and I'd rather spend one day married to him than no days."  Huesman's longtime friend, Bob Yux, praised Carol as her husband's soulmate and thanked her for prolonging his life through her devoted care.  "Her spontaneity and enthusiasm complemented his perfectly," Yux said.  "He was never happier than when he married Carol and that happiness never dwindled, even near the end, when he was overcome by pain and frustration.  When I visited them recently Carol said, 'I need to be less spontaneous.'  In a stronger voice than I had heard in a long time, Tony cried out, 'No!' That's one of the things I love about you.'"

Huesman's pastor, the Rev. Gerald Haemmerle, praised his courage before some 400 mourners at a funeral Mass Thursday, Aug. 13, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Kettering: "A heart transplant was a new and dangerous procedure at the time, but Tony didn't give it a moment's hesitation.  He wanted to live." And live he did - a remarkable, full life, fueled by his love of family and friends, his passion for fighting heart disease.  He founded the Huesman Heart Foundation with the goal of educating schoolchildren.  "When we think of Tony, we think of the heart," Haemmerle said.  The funeral program noted, "An organ donor saved Tony's life by giving him 31 more years to be son, husband and friend.  This allowed him to touch the hearts of so many in our community.  Please consider honoring Tony's life by registering as an organ donor today at donatelifeohio.org."

Yux asked mourners to stand up if Huesman had touched their lives.  The entire congregation rose to its feet.  "Tony often said, 'It doesn't really matter when we die, how we die or why we die; what really matters though is how we live, and the hearts and souls of those we touch along the way,'" Yux concluded.  "Thanks to all of you who have helped Tony to matter more than any man I have ever known."

Tony has a room at Alter named after him. A Tony Huesman leadership scholarship is awarded to two Alter students each year. Big shoes to fill.
-- Tom Pernik
I met Tony in the 6th grade, playing football for Incarnation. There's not a lot more that I can say about Tony that hasn't already been related by others.. I will only say this: Tony loved a good party!

What a great and quiet guy. I remember when he joined us on the soccer team in high school when we were still a club team. I remember the opposing team had a big dude was nothing more than a two-bit hatchet man that picked fights with anyone that got in his way. This guy picked a fight with Frank, and Frank would simply get into his karate stance, while our team became spectators, knowing this bully was in a bad place. The bully backed down after hearing our comments about Frank's expertise, and seeing Frank in his pose. Quite the memory. Rest in Peace Frank!

DIGIORGIO, Anthony Joseph "Tony" Age 59, formerly of Washington Township passed away Sunday, September 25, 2016.  He was a graduate of Alter High School in 1975 and attended the University of Dayton.  Tony was a realtor/broker for the past 25 years and was a member of the Dayton Area Board of Realtors.

In recent years Tony found great joy in property management and loved working with his hands to refurbish houses.  Tony was a Corvette enthusiast and spent many years attending car shows around the country.  He earned the Bloomington Gold Award for his restored 1967 Lyndale blue big block Corvette; the highest honor of achievement.

Tony had a great love for Springer Spaniels and enjoyed them as pets for many years.  He had a strong connection to the Miamisburg community where he lived as a child, had his first paper route, his job at the Dairy Queen, and friends whom he still knows today.  He had a generous heart; treasuring their journey from infants to college.  He was so proud of all they had accomplished thus far.

Tony is preceded in death by his mother Catherine DiGiorgio (O'Connor).  He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan (Dennler); son, Michael Anthony DiGiorgio and daughter, Sarah Kathryne DiGiorgio, his father, Tony DiGiorgio, Sr., siblings; Cathy DiGiorgio, Jim DiGiorgio (Dallas), Teresa DiGiorgio, and Dino DiGiorgio (Pittsburgh) and a host of dedicated cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.

Tony Digiorgio and I were roommates in a small house in Miamisburg for a year during my junior year at Wright State. He was a Pepsi Truck driver back then, was very buff, and was a very fun person to live with.
-- Alan Steffens
He partied often and finally one night I decided to bag the school work and join him. We went out and I did my best to keep up with his "Wild Turkey" consumption. When we got home I passed out on the couch in the living room. It was right next to a huge pair of stereo speakers. He woke up early that morning, snuck into the living room, pulled out a sound effects record I had, deftly found the sound effect of a car crash, turned up the volume to full and dropped the needle on the turn table. I woke up to what sounded like a car crashing into our living room ... scared the living crap out of me. There was Tony sitting in the chair next to me as my heart rate began to slow back down, laughing his ass off. That was Tony.

Siblings weekend at Ohio University, visiting our sisters. Quite a memorable experience. Rest in Peace Charlie!
-- Tom Pernik
Does anyone remember his nickname? "ChasNath". What a great person he was. We didn't really run together but for some reason we spent an entire Saturday together like in 7th grade. I seem to recall we just bumped into one another over near his house on Rahn road and went hiking in the woods, tried to sneak into Marinol Pool; when we got back to his house I got an invite to stay for supper with the family. I've always remembered the gentle lesson I learned that day - that there were so many really good people in the world "outside" of your immediate circle.
-- Kevin McClusky
Kevin McCluskey-I happen to be looking through our list of classmates who have passed away and was reading Charlie's. What you wrote was so genuine and your last line so true!
-- Christa Corpstein
I remember him so well! Nicest guy! Sad!
-- Tina Stodd
Really sorry didn't get to know him better, such a nice guy!

Kevin touched many lives and we'll miss his hearty laugh, silly jokes and his big smile.

As he said in a recent note to a friend who had a death in the family: Death is not putting out the light, it is extinguishing the candle because dawn has come.

Matthew James Horvath
February 20, 1957 - July 12, 2019
Matthew "Matt" James Horvath passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019 at the age of 62 years.  Matt will be forever remembered and loved by his wife of 41 years, Kathleen "Kathy", twin sons, Oliver (Abigail) and Benjamin (Alicia), parents, James and Mary Ann, and brothers, Mark (Jean) and Mike. Matt is also cherished by his two grandchildren, Emilia and Olton.

Matt was born February 20, 1957 in Dayton, Ohio.  He grew up in Dayton and raised his own family in Oakwood.  Matt graduated from Alter High School and the University of Dayton with a B.A. and Masters, majoring in Psychology.  He spent his career working to advocate for those with disabilities.  His caring, gentleness, and kindness was recognized by all who crossed paths with him.

In his spare time, Matt was an avid runner, completing 37 marathons and two 50 mile ultra marathons.  His favorite race was the Marine Corps Marathon which he was training to complete in the fall.  Matt also found pleasure in woodworking and restoration projects.  A few include the complete rebuild of an over hundred year old antique German wooden clock, refurbishing numerous antique spotlights, and his most recent project being the complete restoration of a 110 year old water pump.  He and Kathy often found things he could work on during their time spent antiquing, a hobby they enjoyed doing together.

Matt also loved the outdoors.  He took his sons on several back-packing adventures in the midwest with his brother, Mike, and nephew, Steven.  While at home, he took pride in working in the yard with his beloved dalmatian, Jazz, by his side as he tended to some of the most unique plants grown in Oakwood.

Matt Horvath was a great friend in high school and college. He was a member of the Polish Mafia, South Dayton Lumberjacks, French Bauer Football League, and one of the fans who stayed up all night in Gary Zimmerman’s Van to be first in line to buy basketball tournament tickets. He had a great sense of humor. One of my favorite memories in high school occurred during Junior year, when we could not stop laughing and did not eat because we were chortling so hard about being trapped in the bed of a dump truck, staying away from an amorous German Shepard dog on the Zimmerman farm. All of my heart goes out to the Horvath-Halprin family. May perpetual light shine upon him and may he enjoy the benefits of the kindness and grace he lived.
--Bill Barlow
Matt was a true gentleman, a kind to the core soul, a great and loving man. His parents and brother so terrific, too! Just tremendously kind, generous, decent humans. We need more Matts on this earth. What a legacy! So sorry for your deep loss Kathy and family. May you be comforted by the extraordinary love we all send your way.
-- Shary Hauer
What a nice tribute to Matt. I remember him from high school years so long ago. Rest well, Matt. Good guy.
